PMI death-marketing entraps youths: stop illegal concert

Multinational tobacco giant Phillip Morris International (PMI), from April of this year, has been organizing different striking concerts with attractive titles like – ‘Road to Rock Nation’, ‘Rock Town’ and ‘Rock City’, at posh hotels and clubs in the capital Dhaka to promote and advertise their products, particularly Marlboro cigarette.

The tobacco industry watch team of PROGGA has captured such promotional event of Marlboro cigarette from the concert venue on November 07, 2014 at All Community Club in Gulshan circle 2. Investigation found that female youths were selling Marlboro cigarette packets and an attractive lighter was served as a gift with every cigarette packets.

The next concert will be held at Institute of Engineers of Bangladesh on November 14, 2014 and finale of the entire programme is tentatively scheduled to end in December at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC).

According to the amended tobacco control law of 2013, all forms of advertisements of tobacco products is banned, and the PMI is extremely violating the law by advertising and promoting Marlboro at the concert venues. Basically, the concerts are fronts to promote their brand Marlboro cleverly. Therefore, the scheduled concerts should be stopped at any cost to make the youths free from the PMI ill motives.
