Speaker opposes tobacco, DC ‘yes-man’ for TI

Speaker of the National Parliament, Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, has urged about 50 MPs to take anti-tobacco attitudes to undermine countrywide tobacco industry’s aggression, and by the same time at another meeting Dhaka DC, with the participation of a British American Tobacco Bangladesh (BATB) representative, was encouraging the magistrates to be considerate during their drives, reads a report on www.banglanews24.com on May 21, 2014 by Mobinul Islam and Mazadul Noyon- an ATMA member.

Presence of the tobacco companies in anti-tobacco meetings is unexpected, unusual and violation of the amended tobacco control law. When asked about the BATB representative and law violation, the agitated DC said, “Don’t show me law”.

It has also been told in the meeting that during mobile court drive, the magistrates should be more considerate on penalizing the superstores like Swapno, Meena Bazar and Agora although they were found advertising of tobacco products with cigarette vending machines. A few days back, Swapnowas fined Tk 100,000 for advertising tobacco products violating the amended tobacco control act.

It is weird that the Parliament Speaker is forbidding the MPs to promote tobacco, and the DC is indirectly inspiring the magistrates to be kind to the tobacco companies. This is another evil way of the tobacco company to hamper the tobacco control passage in the country.
