Tobacco Industry invested 30 billion takas to capture international tobacco market

The expansion of Tobacco cultivation in recent year is alarming. Tobacco Industry is investing enormous amount of money to capture international market and set export target of USD 1 billion, says a report published May 4, 2014 in the Daily Jugantor by one of the ATMA members Mizan Chowdhury. The tobacco industries are exploiting cheap labour, cheap production cost, easy access to cultivatable land, favourable climate and making maximum profit for their companies.

It is to be noted that most developed countries have restrictions in tobacco cultivation so they are using the above mentioned facilities to make their business more profitable day by day. There is no tobacco cultivation policy under the Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) (Amended) Act 2013.  To stop this exploitation the government needs to come up with a policy to regulate cultivation.
